Thermally Conductive Insulators in Power Supply Adapter

power adapter thermal pad

Power adapter is a power supply conversion device for small portable electronic equipment and electronic appliances. It's generally composed of shells, transformers, inductors, capacitors, control ICs, PCB boards and other components. It's working principle is converted from AC input to DC Output. According to the connection method, it can be divided into wall-plug type and desktop type.

Due to the use of a large number of high-power semiconductor devices in the power adapter, such as rectifier bridge stacks, high-current rectifier tubes, high-power triodes or field effect tubes, a large amount of heat will be generated during work, once the power supply temperature exceeds 75°C, if failure to discharge the heat in a timely manner and keep it at a reasonable level will affect the normal operation of the power adapter, and even damage the power adapter in severe cases. Generally, power adapter manufacturers use some thermally conductive insulating materials to help the power supply dissipate heat during design and production. So what are the commonly used thermally conductive insulating materials for power adapter cooling solutions?

Thermal gap fillers

Thermal gap fillers are formulated in the lab and placed into electronic devices and systems to get into those small pockets of air, small gaps in space between hot components and a chassis or heat sink assembly. These gaps create thermal barriers to heat transfer due to the low thermal conductivity of air. They bridge what had been an air-filled interface. Gap fillers successfully transfer heat from sensitive components and help keep devices compliant and within prescribed heat limits.

Thermal cooling pads

For the power supply industry, thermal pads are usually used in a small proportion, but sometimes they are indispensable. Usually, the application of thermal pads in power adapters is mainly concentrated on PCB boards. A special application and demand must there will be a special supply to satisfy it. Applied on the PCB board, the thermal pad has multiple functions such as high thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, shockproof and anti-puncture, and can effectively solve safety problems for the client.
